Experimental and Educational Farm at the Higher National Veterinary School
Linking theory and practice for veterinary excellence.
The Experimental and Educational Farm is a core structure at the Higher National Veterinary School (ENSV). It offers students an immersive, real-world learning environment that translates theoretical knowledge into technical and professional skills, while also serving as a strategic hub for research at the School.
As a central element of ENSV, the Farm goes beyond a traditional livestock facility, acting as a hands-on learning platform that bridges classroom instruction with the realities of veterinary practice.
Principal Missions
Built on four strategic pillars, the Farm plays an essential role in the School’s activities, namely:
- Practical Teaching:Bolsters initial theoretical education via hands-on practical work and daily clinical sessions, providing students with a real-world environment to develop expertise in animal husbandry, health, nutrition, and welfare.
- Animal Health and welfare:Promote diversified livestock farming in full compliance with biosecurity norms and health guidelines.
- Animal Products and By-products: Guarantee access to living specimens and biological materials (blood, milk, organs) for use in tutorial and autopsy sessions.
- Research Support:Provide logistical and scientific support for national research projects and academic theses (Final Year Projects, Master’s, and Doctoral).
Structure and Facilities
The Farm is structured into specialized units, supporting a multidisciplinary approach to animal health:
Poultry Unit (Birds and Game)
Equipped with an aviary and a battery-rearing facility, this unit houses a variety of species (quail, ducks, geese, pheasants, guinea fowl, and ornamental chickens). It provides an ideal environment for mastering controlled poultry production.
Rabbit Unit:
The School’s rabbitry supports practical sessions dedicated to rabbit breeding, feeding, and health.
Ruminants Unit (Cattle, Sheep, Goats)
Using a semi-intensive farming approach, this unit provides hands-on training in herd management, pasture oversight, and strict health monitoring.
Equine Unit (Horses)
This unit offers practical training in equine handling, restraint techniques, and species-specific care of this noble animal.
The Farm’s Activities
- Livestock farming and production
The Teaching Farm ensures diversified livestock farming and regulated in full compliance with animal welfare principles, biosecurity standards, and sanitary requirements. It provides:
- animal products (meat, milk, eggs) for educational use;
- biological matrices and animal carcasses for practical training, laboratory activities, and instruction in anatomy and pathology.
- Educational activities
- The Farm plays an essential role in practical education by supporting year-round practical and clinical training for both departments of the School.
- It also supports field training for second and third-year students, enabling their development of professional skills in animal husbandry and health management.
- Research and experimentation
The Teaching Farm is a major contributor to research in the field by hosting Final Year Projects, Master’s and Doctoral theses, as well a number of national research initiatives.
Future Perspectives
The Teaching Farm aims to become a modern hub for training, research, and adding value to support the School. Its main objectives include:
- Strengthen practical learning through the development of practical sessions, internships, and learning programs.
- Improve livestock management by incorporating digital tools, improving facilities, and promoting animal welfare.
- Promote research and experimentation in collaboration with laboratories, focusing on nutrition, reproduction, and animal health.
- Strengthen its biosecurity and safety by optimizing sanitary protocols and workflow management.
- Build partnerships with institutions and stakeholders in the agricultural sector, positioning the Farm as a showcase for teaching and professional excellence.
- Implement a sustainability-focused approach grounded in environmentally friendly practices and efficient resource management.
